Geo-blocking and stage identity

The two most effective privacy tools are a well-separated stage identity and geo-blocking. Neither is perfect on its own; together they reduce your risk a lot.

Build a separate stage identity

• Stage name: unrelated to your real name, nicknames, pets, birthdays or usernames you’ve used elsewhere.
• Separate email address, used only for your cam work.
• Separate social accounts for promotion, created with that email, never linked to your personal phone contacts or accounts.
• Separate photos: don’t reuse images that exist on your personal profiles. Reverse image search can connect them.
• No personal facts in your bio: no real birthday, city, school, workplace or unique tattoos you want private.
• Payout details are private. Platforms show your legal name and bank details only to their admin and payment teams, not to viewers.

How geo-blocking works

Almost every platform lets you hide your room and profile from viewers in chosen locations, based on their IP address.

Tips:

• Block your own city or region, and where your family, school or work are.
• Blocking a whole country costs you viewers, and often your best-paying ones who speak your language. Weigh it up.
• Re-check your settings after platform updates.

What geo-blocking can’t do

• VPNs: a viewer using a VPN appears to be somewhere else and can see you.
• Recording and reposting: anyone who can see you can record the stream. See leaks and DMCA takedowns.
• People you tell: the most common way performers are outed is through people they know.

So treat geo-blocking as risk reduction, not a guarantee.

Extra layers

• Faceless shows, wigs, masks or different make-up.
• A neutral background with nothing identifying.
• Be careful with reflections (mirrors, glasses, screens) and sounds (local announcements, recognisable voices).
• Turn off location data on photos and on your phone’s camera app.
• Use 2-step verification on every account.
